Acne Treatments from Inflammatory to Severe; Severe Nodular to Cystic Acne

Cystic acne treatments are comprised of a few methods. Though acne is never really a serious health threat, if not given the proper treatment it may result in serious scarring and may lead to disfiguring of the upper layers of skin tissue. Fundamentally, acne cannot be fully cured but several methods of treatment may be performed.

For mild and severe acne, treatments may include reduction of productivity of the sebaceous glands which produces the oily substance called as sebum, reduction of acne-infecting bacteria growth named as Propionibacterium acnes or P. acnes, and improving the manner of dead skin cell exfoliation so they will not clog the pores of the skin.

Several things must be remembered when treating mild and severe cases of acne. The pimple must not be popped or squeezed as this may trigger the spread of infection to other parts of the skin.

Poping and squeezing pimples aggravates the acne and creates a trauma where bacteria may invade the affected areas.

In return, the immune system will release white blood cells which ultimately result in infection due to the reaction of the body to the activities of the bacteria and the white blood cells.

Many cases of mild acne may be treated with topical and homeophatic treatments. Over-the-counter topical medications may be applied on the skin's surface. Homeophatic treatments may have the same identity, but they normaly do not need a prescription from the doctor. Additionally, soap and water or antiseptic wash may aid in the treatment of mild inflammatory acne, although the maximum prescribed washing may only be up to twice a day. And to avoid the further spread of infection, scrubbing must be gentle with a very smooth cloth.

Topical treatments for more severe forms of acne may be minocycline, doxycycline, tetracycline, and erythromycine. All these must be taken under the strict administration of a physician to equate the side effects against the benefits of these drugs. Antibiotics may supply a more systematic treatment for the skin disease. But certain bacteria may develop resistance to certain antibiotics and may lessen the potency of such.

For females, oestrogens are usually prescribed and antiandrogens for males. Estrogens may effectively neutralize or decrease the androgens, these are typically found in the oral contraceptives. On the other hand, androgens are stimulated during puberty and are found to stimulate the extra production of sebum.

A drug credited for eliminating acne on a long term basis is isotretinoin which can be taken orally. This drug works by reducing the size of the oil glands so that less oil is produced; thus diminishing the presence of bacteria thriving in the pores. But this medication is noted to have severe disadvantages like serious birth defects for fetuses, therefore, pregnant women or those who are expecting are advised not to use this drug.

Severe nodular or cystic acne treatments may include the therapy named intralesional corticosteroid therapy. This is a considerably painless procedure where a diluted cortisone solution is injected in the cystic lesions, thus relieving the person from the pain due to inflammation.

Another option for the more severe cases of acne is acne surgery. This will significantly increase the speed of eliminating acne by means of manually removing whiteheads and blackheads for cystic acne treatments.
